One of the biggest milestones along the path toward Palm Springs seeing an American Hockey League team hit the ice in 2021 is the day the team gets its name. Thanks to a recent filing with the US Patent and Trademark Office, we may be a step closer to knowing that detail.
According to a post on Detroithockey.net, “Palm Springs Firebirds” was registered as a trademark by attorneys for the Oak View Group Aug. 9. The same attorneys registered 13 domain names for the Seattle team last year. It’s typical for ownership groups to register several possible names for franchises, so there is no guarantee that Firebirds will be the name of the city’s team.
Oak View Group will own both the AHL franchise in Palm Springs and a currently-unnamed NHL affiliate in Seattle. The Palm Springs team was announced in June, when it was also revealed that the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and OVG will build a privately-funded arena on tribal land downtown. Ground is expected to be broken on that 10,000-seat arena in February 2020.
